For the past week or so I’ve been working on installing Mac OSX on my PC, and I thought it would be a good idea to get a category going about it. Installing OSX on a pc can be a walk in the park, a nightmare, or anywhere in between. It really just depends on what your system specs are, and what kind of configuration you’re aiming for.

My system specs are pretty good, and my components close enough to Mac components to make a basic install a breeze, but I’m going for the dual or even triple boot scenario here so it makes things a little bit more complex. That being said, it’s been much easier than installing OSx86 on my HP NX6125 Laptop (AMD Turion64) as I tried, albeit unsuccessfully a few years back.

I plan on writing some useful howto’s, FAQ’s and other articles in this category. There seems to be a lack of decent guides out there that’ll walk you through the entire process, so I guess my goal is to provide just that. I’m also going to create a couple of different systems, ranging in price that will be perfectly suited for OSX.

Disclaimer (legal issues)

I in no way condone any illegal action, and I despise piracy. While I will mention and refer to various distributions of ‘hacked’ OSX versions, all of which can be freely downloaded, I encourage you to buy the OS before you obtain the releases I mention. Software piracy is illegal and carries a stiff penalty with it. I also take no responsibility whatsoever for any damages caused by your use of the information provided here.

I’m also not a hypocrite. I do in fact own several versions of Mac OSX including the 10.5.6 version which I am currently working with. Even if you tried to look on my computer to see if this was true, my keyboard would send a million volts right to your brain all the while the power supply fan would blow Potassium Cyanide gas in your face – just from one failed password attempt. I don’t even use my computer without a gas mask and inch thick rubber gloves! Just kidding. But seriously, don’t steal software.

The other issue I should probably make you aware of is the license that comes with Apple’s OSX. In short, it explicitly prohibits the use of [it] on anything except for a Macintosh. The legality of this and other clauses are currently being disputed by Apple and Pystar. The latter company you can actually buy a PC from with your choice of any recent version of Windows, OSX, and some of the more popular Linux distros. Pretty cool huh?

Someone described Apples terms of use as being like a car company telling you you could only drive your new car on the roads they say are OK to drive it on. I couldn’t agree more. I personally think the limitations Apple imposes are bullshit; if I own something I’ll do whatever I damn well please with it so long as it’s not breaking other laws. Of course, depending on the final ruling in this case I may uninstall OSX off of my hackintosh and buy a brand new PowerMac!
