Well, I started this “find me” category because I thought it would be cool and I guess it just dawned on me that xGPS could send emails with Google Maps links to your current GPS coordinate and WordPress could receive email and post it immediately. I had some problems at first, but figured it out fairly quickly. Thank God WordPress only posts emails that originate from administrator’s email adresses. At first I didn’t know that; I’m the kind of guy who likes to just jump into projects without really doing a whole lot of research to begin with. Of course I eventually figured it out.

Then there was the problem with these GPS postings crowding out my real posts on the homepage, but a plugin called “Simply Exclude” took care of that part for me. Now my problem is that the Google Maps links show up as just text on the posts. I went back and made links out of them all, but it’s somewhat unnerving because when I send an xGPS email to a regular email address the link shows up just fine. Perhaps I’ll write a Wordpress plugin that recognizes links based on analyzing the words in your post and automatically makes them for you…

I’ll get around to that later (if I ever do). At the moment I have a math final coming up next week, a test and a final paper for Cultural Anthropology (hundreds of pages of reading), and a web page for my aunt’s cottage that I need to finish. And don’t forget all the typical IT problems at work on top of the FTP/Web upload system I’m developing for them.

So I guess I’d also like to point out that tracking someone’s GPS updates via WordPress is kind of inefficient anyways. That’s why I bought the “PathTracker” app from iTunes, but it too has it’s flaws. For me it always seems to freeze permanently which forces me to uninstall it and reinstall it… but I chose to just keep it uninstalled. You can find that app and try it for yourself at http://pathtracks.com/. I will say that the author was nice enough to get back to me on my email about it, and there is a new version out now so maybe it’s better than the version I had installed. I’ll reinstall and update it eventually and post my results.
